Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Touted as one of the most natural hair transplant techniques for a reason, follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a popular choice for treating hair loss and baldness in men. FUE follows an intricate process in which follicles are extracted from the back of the head one at a time.
This technique makes for a non-invasive and virtually painless experience. Your assigned hair transplant doctor will use a surgical punch or other device to make a small circular incision in the skin to extract follicular units from the scalp. The follicles extracted from the donor area are then transplanted in the recipient area (hair loss area).
What happens in a follicular unit extraction treatment?
During the procedure, hair loss patients are awake as it is virtually painless with the use of local anesthesia. After local anesthesia is administered, the donor area will be extensively shaved in order to harvest an optimal number of grafts.
A special device is used to make tiny (less than one millimeter) circular excisions around clumps of up to four hairs from the donor area (back of the head). Follicular units are extracted from the donor site because the hairs found in the back of the head are genetically designed to not fall out as they restore this quality when they are transplanted.
After the follicles are removed, they are gently implanted in small slits in the balding areas to recreate a full and natural hairline. There are no sutures required with this technique. The tiny puncture sites heal on their own, leaving barely noticeable tiny scars scattered throughout the donor zone.
What makes FUE the most successful hair transplantation technique?
FUE is the best option for hair restoration if you don’t want linear scarring from an incision, like to wear your hair short, or want a shorter healing time. If you have a narrow area of donor supply or poor scalp elasticity, follicular unit transplantation is an ideal method for the treatment of different levels of baldness. Discover why FUE has become the most successful hair transplantation technique.
Non Invasive - the nature of this technique enables hair transplant surgeons deliver the most comfortable and painless hair restoration experience. Hair follicles, along with the surrounding tissue, are meticulously extracted with a tiny punch that ranges in size from 0.7mm to 1.0mm, leaving no wound or visible scars.
No Linear Scarring - unlike the traditional follicular unit transplantation technique, FUE hair transplantation technique leave no wound closures, no linear scarring making it utterly convenient to wear very short hairstyles.
Short Recovery Time - you can return to work and workout regimens in a shorter time than with other invasive methods. Owing to the fact that FUE is not invasive and there are no linear wounds or closure used, recovery period is very short and discomfort is very minimal.
Diverse Donor Supply - with FUE, there’s a potential for increased donor areas in the body where doctors have the ability to extract healthy hair follicles from multiple areas of the body, including chests, arms and other areas.
Optimal Hair Distribution - our hair restoration specialists work diligently to ensure natural hair distribution. The nature of the follicular unit extraction process helps hair transplant doctors place individual follicular units in a far more natural and seamless manner than the plugs of the past. Hair transplant surgeons can detect and select finer single hair follicles that are ideal for the hairline and nape of the neck - or thicker follicles for other areas of the scalp.
Ideal for Eyebrows Transplant - FUE is ideal for other types of hair restoration treatments including eyebrows transplant. The technique yields excellent precision and accuracy when performing a painstaking procedure like eyebrows transplant.
Results of FUE
It is important for patients to have realistic expectations of FUE results. While the final results of this procedure will be long-lasting, the results may not be immediate. During the first few weeks following follicular hair transplant procedure, you will notice hair shafts that were transplanted begin to fall out.
This is normal and should not be a cause for concern. Within three to four months, new hair shafts will begin to grow from the transplanted hair follicles. The full results of follicular hair transplant procedure will be apparent 8-10 months following treatment. Once the results of FUE have been realized, the treated area will continue to produce full, healthy hair.
