Ear Surgery

Many people are born with protruding ears that are out of proportion with the rest of their facial features. Protruding ears can have a negative psychological impact on a person’s self esteem.

Young children in particular can fall victim to taunts or teases at school. Fortunately, ear surgery can correct misshaped, disproportionate, or uneven ears. With the help of our expert plastic surgeons, ears can be reshaped and resized to fit the facial structure perfectly.

What can ear surgery do for your appearance?

With ear pinning, you can have perfectly proportioned, perfectly even ears. Otoplasty can have dramatic results and can enhance your self confidence. The procedure is specifically designed to set prominent ears closer to the head and reduce the size of your ears.

Whether the patient is a child or an adult, ear pinning improve self-esteem. Regardless of the reasons - rational or emotional - there are many benefits to ear surgery. Explore some of the benefits attained by ear surgery:

- Can be performed on both children and adults

- Enhances self-esteem and helps you feel good about your appearance

- Helps children avoid being ridiculed or stared at by others

- Safe, effective procedure

- Long-lasting results

- Children can develop properly, without psychological damage or being taunted by others

- Can be combined with other procedures, such as nose surgery

- Promotes symmetry among facial features

What happens during ear surgery?

Ear pinning begins with an incision just behind the ear, in the natural fold where is the ear is joined to the head. One of our plastic surgery specialists at Esteworld Medical Group will then remove the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right result.

In some instances, the doctor may trim the cartilage, shaping it into a more natural-looking form and then pin the cartilage back with permanent suture to secure the cartilage.

In other cases, the doctor will not remove any cartilage at all, using stitches to hold the cartilage permanently in place. After sculpting the cartilage to the desired shape, the doctor may apply sutures to anchor the ear until healing occurs to hold the ear in the appropriate position.

Ear surgery varies from person to person depending on the specific cosmetic needs. All ear surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis and under general anaesthesia, allowing you to return home on the same day of surgery.

Who qualifies for ear surgery?

General good health and realistic expectations are important requirements to undergo ear surgery.

Ear pinning is a unique plastic surgery procedure which is typically performed on children ages 4 to 14 years old. It is essential that the ears are fully developed before surgery is performed. Ear surgery is suitable for people who suffer from the following problems:

- Protruding ears

- Malformed earlobes

- Small ears

- Misshaped ears

During your initial consultation with one of our plastic surgeons at Esteworld Medical Group, she will evaluate your candidacy for ear surgery and will also explain the procedure details, including risks and benefits.

Recovering from ear surgery

After ear surgery, soft dressings are applied to the ears will remain for a few days. Most ear pinning patients experience some mild discomfort. The doctor may recommend some headbands to hold the ears in the desired position for two weeks following ear surgery.

There will be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing. Because this scar is in a natural crease behind the ear, it is barely noticed. The doctor will prescribe pain medications to help you with any discomfort you may experience.
